About the SHaKE Professional Intensive Course
The SHaKE Professional Intensive Course is a six-hour training programme for practising engineers and other professionals working in the district heating, cooling and energy sectors.
It has been developed from the comprehensive SHaKE Higher Education Learning Package and focuses on the content most relevant to professional practice. The course is intended for participants who already have a basic understanding of energy systems, building services or district heating and cooling, allowing the training to concentrate on current technologies, recent developments, system integration and practical applications.
The materials form a ready-to-use professional training package that can also be adapted by trainers and professional organisations to their own continuing professional development activities.
Professional Course Reader
The SHaKE Professional Course Reader is the core material of the intensive training.
It combines practical guidance for trainers with the theoretical and technical content of the course in one publication. The introductory section explains how the material can be used and provides a suggested structure and schedule for delivering the complete six-hour training programme.
The main part of the Reader brings together professionally relevant content from all six SHaKE thematic modules:
- Introduction to modern district heating and cooling and energy communities
- Heat and cold demand, substations and control
- Heat production, waste heat utilisation, heat pumps and renewable energy sources
- District cooling and combined heat and cold systems
- Advanced DHC systems, optimisation and digital tools
- Refurbishment and modernisation of existing district heating systems
The proposed programme is intended as a practical framework rather than a rigid syllabus and may be adapted to different professional audiences, training contexts and available time.

Supporting presentation materials
A set of condensed presentation slides is provided to support delivery of the professional course.
